The Artist

Vervet Noir Artist’s Statement

After working in the field of Institutional Advancement and Communications for over thirty years, Valerie decided to indulge her creative side and create luxurious garments. Her coats are a combination of her love of images and small stories, or vignettes, of her international experiences. Threading a Story is the byline.

My earliest memory is of rough cobblestones warmed by sunlight. The memory is overlaid with a scent of baking pastry. If I close my eyes I can feel the air, hear the sounds, and recognize the scents of all seven US States and eight countries which I have called home. It has been a tactile journey, and one where welcoming smiles and departing tears have always made me feel loved.

Vervet Noir is my platform to explore the kaleidoscope of images and stories that fill my heart. Using a Paul Poiret inspired cocoon shape for the garment, I fill the shawl collar surface with exquisite embroidery and embroidered poems or stories that evoke a memory.

Although I gravitate toward sensual fabrics such as velvet and silk, I also love the touch of finely woven cottons and linen. While the coats are a natural for a glamorous evening event, dressing them “down” with a t-shirt and jeans is an opportunity to add some joy to daytime rambles. I personally see no reason for glamour to be limited to the night.

Please join me as I thread my story.  I look forward to sharing the luxurious experience of a Vervet Noir garment on your shoulders.
