AUGUST FIRES

The smokey heat tethers us to earth,
the hammocks languid
              swish/swish
              swish/swish
              swish/swish
the only sound breaking
through the sultry air.

In the heat she enters,
her flight an uneven corkscrew,
              Up/down
              Sky/grass
              Blue/green.

She floats toward the nectars,
filling her tiny self,
              jasmine, rose, lavender
              jasmine, rose, lavender.

and then performs a startling pirouette
into the sky
              Up/up
              Sky/sky
              Blue/blue
leaving only a tiny vision and the
              swish/swish
              swish/swish
              swish/swish
of these long and breathless days.
